ABU Inaugural Lecture: Prof Elizabeth speaks on anaesthesia and pain management

Prof Elizabeth Onuwa Ogboli Nwasor of the Department of Anaesthesia, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University, spoke on anaesthesia and pain management at an inaugural lecture she delivered in ABU today.
Elizabeth, a professor of anaesthesia and pain management, tried to summarize the process involved in her evolution to become a specialist in obstetric anaesthesia, critical care and pain management.
Christened 'FROM "GAS WOMAN" TO PAIN MANAGER: ABOLISHING PAIN, TREATING THE CRITICALLY ILL; THE ODYSSEY OF AN ANAESTHESIOLOGIST', the lecture was the outcome of her journeys and searches in various aspects of anaesthesia, intensive care, resuscitation, pain management and palliative care.

The don said that she decided to speak on the topic because not much was known about Anaesthesia, pain management, critical care and resuscitation.
According to her,  the earliest group of Nigerian doctors ever to be trained in anaesthesia came from the United Kingdom in the late 1950s, having acquired the Diploma of anaesthesia qualification.
She also said that the first autonomous academic department of anaesthesia in Nigeria was established in collaboration with the University of Toronto in 1962 at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos.

In Northern Nigeria, Ahmadu Bello University pioneered the development of anaesthesia, she said.
Prof Elizabeth further explained that the Department of Anaesthesia, Ahmadu Bello University came into existence in 1968.

She stressed the need for the training and retraining of middle level and high level specialist physician-anaesthetists manpower to properly conduct anaesthesia in all parts of Nigeria.
